But what do you think about the question - Has mankind become less vicious and selfish since Blavatsky's era? There are some pluses, such as animals being treated less badly & more concern for ecosystems of the planet. Yet human and national relations are still the pits, generally speaking.

In my opinion I think that it really hasn't changed that much. Yes, there is more concern for the environment in todays world, but human relations are still lacking, what we need is a good dose of tolerance in this world.

Yes, not much change at all. As one of Blavatsky's gurus put it in the Mahatma Letters you mentioned before:

As for human nature in general, it is the same now as it was a million of years ago: Prejudice based upon selfishness; a general unwillingness to give up an established order of things for new modes of life and thought...pride and stubborn resistance to Truth if it but upsets their previous notions of things, — such are the characteristics of your age.

How true this is, and it will not change until mankind discovers what they really are, Truth as to the nature of all things.

Yet our discovery of our true nature needs more than a love of truth. We need to ignore our lower desires. As Iamblichus put it, referring to the Gorgon which if looked at, turned one to stone:

Even so, then, did Perseus, under the guidance of Athene, cut off the head of the Gorgon, which I take to be the power that drags men down into matter and petrifies them through mindless indulgence in the passions.

A true sage
Accepts everything as it is
Ignorant
Rejects and denies.

One can not ignore what one is. One can only try. But attempt becomes a suppression and every suppression leads only to accumulation of what is being suppressed. Accumulated has to find a safety valve, a release, somewhere somehow, or person goes mad. Or becomes a mental pervert. A hypocrite.
Wise one accepts everything. As everything that is - is perfect and has its purpose, or is it not. Unattached acceptance releases, not accumulates. Hence, one that accepted without attachment is in bliss. Sage's mind is like a blue sky. It is, boundless and eternal. A cloud comes and goes, but leaves no mark on the sky.

Being a true sage, compared to we plain folk, is a worthy aim. Yet, there are many paths. Here is a good suggestion from Helena P. Blavatsky, whose body died on this very 8 May of 1891:

The power to know does not come from book-study nor from mere philosophy, but mostly from the actual practice of altruism in deed, word, and thought; for that practice purifies the covers of the soul and permits that light to shine down into the brain-mind. As the brain-mind is the receiver in the waking state, it has to be purified from sense-perception, and the truest way to do this is by combining philosophy with the highest outward and inward virtue.

The theosophical movement is not confined to the varied theosophical groups & organizations. As W.Q. Judge put it:

There is a very great difference between the Theosophical Movement and any Theosophical Society. The Movement is moral, ethical, spiritual, universal, invisible save in effect, and continuous. A Society formed for theosophical work is a visible organization, an effect, a machine for conserving energy and putting it to use; it is not nor can it be universal, nor is it continuous. Organized Theosophical bodies are made by men for their better cooperation, but, being mere outer shells, they must change from time to time as human defects come out, as the times change, and as the great underlying spiritual movement compels such alterations.
