To me, it all comes down to what the cross is to be used for. If it's part of a museum then I don't have a problem with it. If it's a prop for the memorial then I have a big problem with it. My understanding is that it will be part of the museum though that museum will be on the grounds of the memorial. That's not a big deal, in my opinion, as the museum is the functional part of the platform in which the cross does its business.

The presentation makes all the difference in the world. One presentation says "In the days following 9/11, people noticed this steel structure that represented a cross. Because many of the people were Christian, they found solace in this."

The other presentation says "Here is where we mourn all the people who perished as a result of the 9/11 attacks. Over here is a cross made of steel beams from one of the towers. You should pray to the Christian God for these people and their families."

Doesn't matter. It didn't belong where it was for the reasons I stated, and it was moved to a more appropriate sub-forum. Have fun.

The silly things that people argue over !

I'm sure that with a little effort , someone can design an appropriate memorial that incorporates various meaningful symbols, religious and otherwise.

As for it offending certain groups, well some people are just gonna have to suck it up. You can't please everybody.

But I did laugh a little at your last sentence. The cross will never represent their religion to Jews and Muslims. They have a history of people wearing crosses sewn on their battlefield armor coming at them with lances and swords.[/quote]
I think you missed the point.

Then how come the common Atheist as well as the Militant Atheist finds such great disdain with the Christian cross , go to great lengths to protest it / rid it from society , and despise the Jesus who died on it ? How come if its just 'a bronze age symbol' , Atheists muster up so much hostility toward it ?

Christians stage loud protests at the funerals of fallen American soldiers for their role in supporting America's homosexual agenda.

What's that you say? That doesn't reflect the beliefs of 99% of Christians?

Oh. Maybe the same with atheists.

Seems like this issue has reached the mainstream media as i just heard it talked about on a daily syndicated radio program , its online , and in the newspapers . I heard on the program that Atheists are complaining because 'its making them sick as they walk by the cross' , they find it offensive , and it shouldnt be a public display at a Memorial .

How do Atheists feel when they see Arlington National Cemetary on TV with rows of white crosses as far as the eye can see ? Does it make them feel nauseated ?!

Are these Atheists justified , or, it is yet another case of not wanting to be reminded what the cross represents ... what do you think ? No vitrol intended with this post...I just find it absurd what militant Atheists will come up with.
No vitriol intended?! What?!

You sound to me like the perfect storm of arrogant and ignorant. Do you really expect a single person here to believe that you would be fine with a giant Muslim crescent being erected as a monument at Ground Zero? And the crosses at Arlington are vestigial relics from a less enlightened and FAR less tolerant past. Would it be "absurd" to contest row upon row of "No Colored" signs? Are you from Mississippi?

America is a secular nation. Full stop. Period. End of story.

Oh, that's brilliant logic! "People take heated exception to my ignorance and uneducatable allegiance to one of the most counterproductive forces in human history; therefore it's true!"

As an aside, notice that the same argument works for every religion in the history of the planet.

What makes you think that atheists are the only ones who protest against or have a problem with Christian presumptions of privilege and entitlement in society for their religion and its symbol(s)?
