I have a very small dog.

I live in a very expensive neighborhood and town and for the life of me, I do not understand what is up with people not leashing their dogs. Especially bigger dogs.

I have been approached aggressively by big dogs off-leash because of my small dog and it makes me feel really unsafe walking him.

It's so irresponsible not to leash your dog.

What is so hard or difficult about putting your dog on a leash?

Some people think they are special. They ARE special, as in they are especially stupid.

They don't want to hurt their dog's feelings. They are afraid their dog will not love them anymore if they don't let the dog do whatever it wants to do. The same with their kids.

Either that or they are too lazy to control the dog and if their dog poops in public and he isn't on a leash, they can pretend it isn't their dog and then they don't have to pick it up.

Putting a dog on a leash means holding onto the other end of said leash and paying attention to the dog so it doesn't drag you. Takes too much concentration when your hands and your brain are full of cellphone and/or piping hot Starucks, Dunkin Donuts, or McDonalds.

Easier to multitask if you have one of these, but a bigger dog could still dump that latte all over you or put you or your phone on the ground!

If the dog isn't on a leash, chances are you'll be farther away from them when nature calls too.

They can't herd cattle on a leash.

Idk, but there was abundant outrage here lately when a dog somehow ended up being dragged down the street by a passing vehicle. The dog survived, and the owners went bawling to the local news station about how "traffic needs to go more slowly around here!" But they were walking their dog off-leash when it happened.

All you have to do is look in the recent dog park thread to see examples of the combination of entitlement and stupidity that results in dogs being allowed off-leash when they shouldn't be.

No, they can't. They can't herd sheep, retrieve ducks, point quail, or tree raccoons either.

Sorry. It's so irresponsible and you really have no place owning a dog. We just had a small dog off leash hit by a car and died because the owner couldn't be bothered to take necessary precautions. Please think about the safety and well-being of your dog and others before being so careless. They may be just a pet to you, but they mean the world to someone else. Be a responsible and considerate pet owner.

Thanks for the PSA, but suspect you're preaching to the choir here OP.
