For any birders out there, Huntington State Park's winter population is in full bloom. Alas, the ducks always seem to stay just at the extreme range of my camera equipment, so photos aren't very good.

Oh, PD! I love the duck pictures! For the past several weeks I have had a Mr. and Mrs. Merganser in the lake behind my house and have not been able to get a picture at all because my camera broke. I had never seen them before and was (am) so excited so have them visiting.

I have never seen a ruddy duck before. Will have to go to the park again soon and try to spot one.

Thanks so much for sharing!

Thanks guys, you're kind. The mergansers are one of my favs also, but I've never gotten a really good shot. They're awfully skittish. The water droplets on the ruddy was a pleasant surprise. They spend a lot of time under water, but I didn't realize how much it beaded up and stayed in place.

Thanks, Vrexy, great pics. Lookin' out the window, nobody will believe they were taken around here. Are you sure you didn't drive down South to take those??

I just came back from a really long walk on the same beach. Felt like I was in the northern hinterlands. Not a soul on the beach for the first hour or so and then we saw 2 people and 2 dogs. That was it - for miles.

Nothing like a private beach, even in this so-called snow storm!

Default Mr. & Mrs. Merganser

Not even close to the quality of PD's pictures ~ ~ but here are a pair of Hooded Mergansers that have been visiting the lake behind my house.
