We are looking to retire in a year or two, was looking at Calabash and Sunset Beach NC at first, now expanding our search. Would like 15-20 minutes max drive to a beach, would like to stay at 250k or less for a home, small town feel. Also concerned about safe neighborhoods that are willing to accept us yankees from the north.

Little River is more of an area rather than a town so you're not going to find a "small town feel" since there is no real "downtown" area to Little River. Cherry Grove (beach near Little River) is probably the nearest "town" and it is a typical beach community.

Generally speaking, the Little River area is pretty safe but I would, personally, avoid going as far inland as Loris/Longs as those areas tend to have some problems. You should be able to find a home in your price range but that also depends on what size home you're looking for and features/finishes you're looking for. Finding something under 1900 sq ft for that price should not be a problem. As far as neighborhoods willing to accept yankees....LOL....most neighborhoods are occupied by almost nothing but yankees!!!! Finding a native living anywhere near the beach is unusual.

I highly recommend making multiple trips to the area before you move to explore the various areas and neighborhoods. Come specifically to explore...not as a vacation...so that you focus on finding the right area. Finding a good real estate agent to show you around is handy but also go out on your own to see where the grocery stores are, shopping areas, entertainment, etc....places that are important to you. I also recommend renting for a year in the area you choose prior to purchasing a house just to be sure that you've picked the right area. There's not much worse than sinking $250K into a house only to find that you don't like the neighborhood or that particular area. We did this (renting) when we first moved here and are glad that we did because it helped us discover that where we thought we wanted to live was not ideal (too much summer traffic and no back roads from that community).

Thank you for the response. Our plan was to rent for at least a year. I have family in Calabash and Sunset Beach NC, and they also mentioned Little River SC to check out. We are so lost, and time is passing by, it seems like every house we see online sells within days.

There should be plenty of condos to rent for a year. Gives you time to check the area out and make a wise purchase decision. Also gives you the ability to jump on something when it comes up for sale.
