One based on real life: Mellish (the Jewish soldier) against the SS German in hand-to-hand savage mortal combat on the third floor living room of a house in France during the climactic battle scene in Saving Private Ryan.
easily the best fight scene I've ever seen. Unbelievable.
My problem with the Raid is that they always left their groin open for an attack. Their stances were legs spread apart standing so close. In real life, someone would have gotten a nutt shot.
My all-time favorite fight/chase scene is Sarah Connor's escape from the asylum in Terminator 2. Perfectly paced. Complete emotional sympathy with Srah. And absolutley brutal. If you're not cheering Sarah's cunning escape in that scene, then you're just dead inside.
Fun fact: When Sarah first comes out and whacks the snot out of the first orderly, those were real hits. In an earlier scene, that same orderly was supposed to hit Sarah in the gut, and she fell to her knees on the hard floor. The actor kept pulling his punches, so Linda Hamilton kept having to fall to her knees on the floor take after take after take after take. She told the guy to hit her and make it look real. He wouldn't. So she got her revenge. When she came out of that room and hit the guy across the face with that broken mop handle, Linda Hamilton really whacked him. That was not acting.
The fight scene between Roddy and Keith (They Live!) is real.
The trivia:
"The fight between Nada (Roddy Piper) and Frank (Keith David) was only supposed to last 20 seconds, but Piper and David decided to fight it out for real, only faking the hits to the face and groin. They rehearsed the fight for three weeks. Carpenter was so impressed he kept the 5 minute and 20 second scene intact."
Male on male: Eastern Promises.
I won't post a link because it is *very* violent plus male nudity but it can be easily found on youtube.
The scene is steamy and slippery and brutal and different from any other fight scene I've watched.
Honorable mention: This takes me back: The skeleton army in Jason and the Argonauts.
