Default Caribou Rock Hiking Trail

Trail length round trip about 7.6 miles.

Difficult Rating due to rugged rocky trail with steep elevation and challenging route finding in places.

Lay of land is rugged trail with many step hills. Up and down ridges overlooking lakes in the BWCAW.

Caribou Rock Hiking Trail and The Border Route Trails are rough, remote and some of the wildest and most primitive in the state. These trails are not designed for the casual day hikes, Map, compass reading skills, gps are important to have along the hike.

August 14, 10' our hike started at the trailhead. Our hike was about 8 hours in duration until we arrived back at my truck. My gps showed just over 8 miles round trip.

Our hike would bring us to the famous "Stairway Portage" and back again.
Allthough we have hiked longer distances, this hike proved challanging, earning its reputation well.

Near our campsite on East Bearskin Campground

Creek leading to Rose or Duncan lake

Duncan Lake overlook

Bridge at or near Border Route Crossing

Partridge Falls waterfalls at Stairway Portage

Caribou Rock Trail "Stairway Portage" looking from the top. Total of 91 steps two sections.

Stairway Portage, Thanks for coming along on our day hike.

Great pictures, everyone! Tried last week to get some pictures of the Green Lake area in Spicer. Of course it was foggy and gross out that morning, so I'm going to try again this week.

Looking forward to your Green Lake/Spicer pics. I spent many summers on Green Lake growing up as one of my relatives owned the Hultgren Lodge. There is a giant McMansion with a huge fountain there now but the stone wall that was behind the lodge is still there. A great uncle lived in New London and when not playing pinball at the bowling alley, we would go stare at the big sturgeon in the hatchery or bomb bull-heads with rocks at the spill-way. Still visit Spicer and Green Lake from time to time. I'll see if I can dig up and scan some of Dad's old 35 mm slides of the lodge and lake.

All that massive blue water in the very first picture is breathtaking. Even the Missouri River that runs right through my town here in Montana isn't even that impressive to the eye. I love when there's so much water, you can't even see the other side... an it's not even an ocean.

It was a clear 40 dergee evening yet the pure country music still played on with the local talent.
Nothing but classic country tonight in this machine shed.

Thanks
