I've just come back from Bangkok. Miami is not overcrowded! However, no need for OP to fret, Miami will never become Manhattan just by building high rise condos with massive garages and entrances set back far from the main roads.

Apart from Midtown and some newer waterfront areas, It's really the neighborhoods of mid-rise apartment blocks, street life, and public areas that make NYC dense with active street life and distinct neighborhoods. In Miami we tend to build our condos with a very "suburban" approach, emphasizing privacy, exclusivity, and parking. Also, Manhattan and NYC in general can only function as it does because of its massive investment in mass transit, which is not even in the pipeline for Miami in 10-20 years. Even building a single casino/resort downtown has been adamently opposed in part because of traffic issues. There is only so much you can build up a car-dependent infrastructure before you run into capacity issues!

If it takes over an hour to drive from kendall to Downtown imagine how long it will take if more people move here. I think there will be an exodus out of Miami due to high unemployment first.

I think the OP was using the 2 million population figure for Miami Dade county not for Miami proper. Even that figure is off since Miami Dade county currently have 2.5 million people instead. Miami proper does have a impressive amount of highrises with 28 buildings over 500 feet which makes it 4th. in nation behind NYC, Chicago & Houston. I expect as available land disappears due to the Urban growth boundary the city & metro will continue to build more highrises in the future.
As to the OP's original question? No Miami will never be like Manhattan of course Manhattan had a 300 year start!

What if we all non Miamian "propers" move to the city? 2 million people within city limits would be fascinating. I sometimes fantasize about that. What if everyone in Broward were to move to Miami proper as well? 4 million... wow :dreaming:

at least density of 70k per section is needed to fulfill that dream.

Exactly... buildings alone don't make New York what it is today.

Density:

Chicago: 11,864.4/sq mi
Miami: 12,139.5/sq mi

There is something missing here...

^ well that's an average density but realize how small Miami proper is in proportion to Chicago though.
