I would not recommend Hempstead. In fact, any town in which I dont feel safe to walk around at night is a HUGE negative. True, some areas are ok but I feel the majority is not ok. The town has more crime then most towns.
Thats my 2 cents
One street, Terrace Avenue, is infamous for having their satellite streetview pictures (mapquest, google, etc.) showing DRUG DEALS at any time of the night or day.
The gangs are terrible there. It is the hometown of Salvadorans With Pride, one of the most violent street gangs there is, who often wage war with their neighbors, MS-13, another infamous and violent gang. Innocent bystanders have been killed by them.
Walking around outside at night is definitely something you don't want to do there.
As for "driving to the City," if you mean commuting to Manhattan for work, hardly anyone does that. People use public transportation, such as the Long Island Rail Road, to commute to Manhattan.
If you live in a middle class area now, where people work for a living and act decent, it will be a bad change in environment for you.
Jobs in Hempstead are not plentiful.
Talk your friend into getting out of there if you want to share an apartment with her.
Where does your friend work? Where are you plannning to seek work? If we have that information, we can give you some suggestions for better neighborhoods that are affordable.
Yeahh i have heard of terrance ave.. it does not have a good rep. at all!..And yes comming from a decent environment it would be a HUGE change.. I would like to spend no more than 1,200 1,500 MAX.. my family will help me for a while until i get settle and still might continue to sometimes help... what are there no jobs there? what do people do then for income?.. She works at Roosevelt Field Mall i beleive?!
And yes I will suggest moving and spliting rent somewhere else.. as far as getting to the city is the LLRR the only want to get there without actually driving into the city?
OO and out of curiosity about how much is rent in Hempstead for an apt? AND why are there soo many illegals hello don't ppl know they are ILLEGAL!!!?? how do they get jobs homes etc... that is just odd to me..
I don't know if anyone who answered your questions have ever lived in the area you are talking about but I'm here to tell you that I HAVE lived in that area and sure it's a bit run down. Does your friend live in the complex right on Jerusalem ave? If so, it's not really as bad as people make it out to be. However, you stated you come from a good area where people work and own homes.....People in that area work and own homes too so, I don't know where you were going with that. Terrace Ave is a bad area but it's no where near your friends house. I would only suggest you drive into the city for leisure only. Trying to get to the city at anytime in the AM is like sitting in a parking lot. If you and your friend want to live in Hempstead, I'd suggest renting a co-op in Cathedral Gardens. Just like anywhere, if you have some street smarts, you will do just fine but, If you can spend 1200 to 1500, look elsewhere. If you want to room with your friend, the combined rent you could pay would get you something very nice in a very nice neighborhood
Just to agree with the post above, if you can afford 1200 - 1500 a month, you should be able to find a place in a bit better neighborhood than Hempstead. (BTW- trust me, there are good, hard-working folks in Hempstead, you just never hear about them. I grew up there and my folks still live there).
I tend to like the sound shore, and during a recent apt. search I found PLENTY of places in RVC, Baldwin, Freeport (south of Atlantic), Lynbrook, and a bit in Oceanside. In your price range there is a surprising amount of apts. available. You can start w/ a Google Real Estate search, and also MLSLI rental search. Don't forget to look for Co-ops/Condos that are being rented by their owner. Good luck!
Roosevelt Field is in the Hamlet of East Garden City ("Garden City, NY 11530" mailing address), and is just a a few miles to the north and east of the Village of Hempstead.
Yup she lives right there in that complex!.. and i thought terrance ave was only about 10 mins away.. What about colleges and univerisities around there and jobs?.. Yes ive heard driving into the city is a BIG no no!
Grepman thanks for a list of places to look at you have been VERY helpful !
What about colleges and univerisities around there ...
Hofstra University is in the northeast part of the Village of Hempstead, Nassau Community College is in the Hamlet of East Garden City and Adelphi University is in the Village of Garden City.
A map of the Village of Hempstead in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County:

The Village of Hempstead has a different border than does the "Hempstead, NY 11550" ZIP Code postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Hempstead, NY 11550" mailing address and not be in the Village of Hempstead): places that have a "Hempstead, NY 11550" mailing address that are not in the Village of Hempstead are in the Hamlet of East Garden City and the Hamlet of South Hempstead.
I guess to her Hempstead is normal because she has grown up there... and got used to the environment and the life... but thanks for the all the help you guys are all great !! any other info i could use would be great!
I wouldn't even work there...even if for more money and better hours. Much less live there. It is horrible! I'm sorry...I wish I could say something positive.
