Typical right wing nonsense, violent crime is down. Cash bail was a long called for reform.

What does this have to do with anti-semitic comments and illegal immigrants, try to stay on topic.

I hope Blakeman doesn't have any more useless plans, he should stick to reforming the NUMC and stop with the photo ops.

According to CompStat only Murder and Rape are down Assaults/Burglaries/Car Thefts are at or near all time highs. Overall, felony crime is at all time highs.

Regarding cash bail reform, again the overall statistics may show "success" but the recidivism of the most violent perpetrators indicates it's a failure for that cohort.

While Blakeman's reflexive critics might complain ("doesn't he have better things to do" ... "no Jews have been killed yet in the antisemitic campus marches..."he should stay in Nassau County"..."just another photo op"..."he should solve the tax issue first"... ) the rest of us think he did the right thing yesterday by heading over to Columbia's campus to speak up for the threatened kids on campus:

bruceblakeman: Zero tolerance for anti-semitism! Congressman Anthony D'Esposito and I made a visit to Columbia University to let students know that hate will never be accepted on campus or anywhere else. As Passover begins, a prominent rabbi at Columbia University warned Jewish students to go home and not return to campus because of “extreme antisemitism”. The University even cancelled all in-person classes due to anti-Israel protests. As Nassau’s first Jewish County Executive, I’m disgusted by what’s going on at Columbia, Yale University and at Hofstra University, where President Susan Poser is equivocating in her support for Israel. Together with the Congressman, actor/comedian Michael Rapaport, and 77 WABC host Sid Rosenberg, we denounced all forms of hate and anti-semitism.

Crime was down in just about every category except property crime. The public perception is different than actual data.

Judges still have the final decision with violent offenders, if recidivism is actually up then that's on the judges and boards not bail reform.*

Homicides in American cities are falling at the fastest pace in decades, bringing them close to levels they were at before a pandemic-era jump.

Nationwide, homicides dropped around 20% in 133 cities from the beginning of the year through the end of March compared with the same period in 2023, according to crime-data analyst Jeff Asher, who tabulated statistics from police departments across the country.

Philadelphia saw a 35% drop in killings as of April 12 compared with the same period last year, police data show. In New York City, homicides fell 15% through April 7. Homicides in Columbus, Ohio, plunged 58% through April 7.

The new fourth-quarter numbers showed a 13% decline in murder in 2023 from 2022, a 6% decline in reported violent crime and a 4% decline in reported property crime. That’s based on data from around 13,000 law enforcement agencies, policing about 82% of the U.S. population, that provided the FBI with data through December.

We also seem to have a misunderstanding about the concept of bail in this state. In very few instances do we remand pending trial. 99% of all arraigned have the option of pre-trial release, with or without furnishing cash bail. Anyone who could afford bail did just that. Bail money was also returned if the person showed up for court.

I doubt there is anyone walking around today awaiting trial who did not have that ability 5 years ago based upon the same charges.

A more effective conversation would be what to do when someone violates terms of pre-trial release, while still remembering that someone who is out pre-trial has not been convicted of anything yet.

Just go to Compstat and look at the numbers. It is not public perception, the number of crimes in the seven categories making up felony crime is at an all time high.

There were in fact many who couldn't afford bail in the past and ended up waiting in jail especially for drug convictions. These people lost their jobs, usually low paying and ended up out of work with few options, that is a big hit and leads to other criminal behavior. It also leads to an easier conviction for prosecutors, some will agree to anything to get released. This was the entire reason for bail reform, two levels of justice.

Agree on pre-trial violators.

The law definitely needs to be adjusted for repeat petit larceny offenders, especially organized offenders.

The first chart for April indicates a drop in most crime from 2023 for year over year. I think you are looking at the comparison of a week in April 2023 to April 2024. That is NYC, Nassau/Suffolk.
