Blatantly saying you served in Vietnam multiple times when you didn’t whatsoever isn’t even close to a “misstatement” and every bit as egregious as lying about your resume IMO. Regardless lying about your resume (or military service) isn’t illegal and very unlikely to end up in him resigning from congress (especially with the GOPs vote cushion only being 4) there will be little pressure from the GOP for him to resign over this. According to Newsday he told GOP leadership he will throughly address the allegations in the coming days. That should be interesting because I can’t see how he can possibly explain any of this. He will likely issue a lame apology for “exaggerating” some aspects of his past and just move on. If he pays a price it will be at the ballot box in 2024, if he even runs again

If he had said he was in the armed forces when he never served in the military that would be comparable to one of Santos’s lies. Exaggerating your career would be saying you were an investment manager at Citi when you were nothing more than a trainee. Saying you were a Citi investment manager when you never worked for Citi in any capacity is not an exaggeration, it is a fraudulent claim.
His future now will probably depend on whether the Republicans think they can replace him with another Republican in a special election if that is the process for replacing him.

Turnout in a Special Election is always a complete unknown and the district as a whole generally does lean Democratic (though it did get slightly more Republican after redistricting. With that said, this would not be a Special Election the GOP would likely want to risk and if anything was a seat that the overall thought was likely going to be a one-term rental.
Going a bit deeper as far as if he were to resign or anything like that, with the slim majority I do not see the GOP making a big push to get him to resign. However, things get quite a bit more complicated if he faces legal issues due to his financial disclosures. The vast differences between his 2020 and 2022 disclosures and a company that no record can actually be found of could create a bunch of legal problems. It is one thing to completely lie and make up your resume, it is another to completely lie and make up your financial disclosures.
I sure didn’t think he would win. Funny he actually stealth edited his website in late October deleting any references to having been employed by Citi or Goldman according to axios.
This won’t keep him from serving his term though, Sen Blumenthal was caught red handed lying he served in Vietnam (to vets no less). He after getting slammed apologized and that was that. Santos will likely issue some vague apology and a lame excuse.
And that’s why informed folks snicker when Blumenthal accuses others of telling lies.

It’s a fraudulent claim to say you fought in the war to score political points when in reality he was nothing more than a reservist who literally never left the states. But that’s neither here nor there…
As far as Santos goes there is absolutely no way the GOP will risk a special election in a toss up/lean dem district over this as it is, no way. If there is something seriously illegal found maybe, but even if there are financial disclosure issues will likely be a slap on the wrist from the ethics committee and a censure at worst like Charles Rangel got.
Be careful who you vote for. They can lie their way to congress.
The purveyors of the “Hands up Don’t Shoot Hoax”, “Russia Collusion Hoax”, and “Biden’s Laptop is Russian Disinformation Hoax” (New York Times) may be reporting truthfully on this new Republican Congressman. We’ll see.
Yeah, it really is amazing this wasn't caught sooner. I can get Suozi's team not doing much oppo research to a point as the seat really wasn't on anyone's radar about being competitive in 2020. However, with it being an open seat, a stronger GOP year and redistricting making the district a bit more Republican (albeit slightly) this should have been something Zimmerman's team and the DCCC should have looked more into. They just took the race for granted, it showed with how they campaigned and the result and now this. Really is amazing.
The same can be said of Joseph Cairo, he seemed surprised, the GOP should be vetting candidates. Too late to do anything about this now, maybe he steps down. He does appear to have some problems on his financial disclosure statement, his family company, the Devolder Organization has no website and doesn't appear on Linkedin. Then there is his recent appearance at the Young Republicans Gala in Manhattan attended by white supremacists, Marjorie Greene and conspiracy theorists.

His biggest problems will probably be financial disclosure. All this sudden wealth after the corporate dissolutions with absolutely no accounting? Some of his problems are big felonies and long prison terms. I wonder what his taxes look like? Pay any? even file? He has charity problems, campaign finance/spending problems, supposed real estate holdings that defy discovery, pyramid scheme problem worth $17M?? He is like a mini plumpkin He skated under the radar and now they will be taking a close look.
