Was thinking of taking the pups up to Schweitzer's Ski Resort tomorrow and Wednesday. Any idea how much "cooler" it will be up there?
Schweitzer was about 10 to 15 degrees cooler than Sandpoint, so it will still be warm. The heat wave you're getting now is phenomenal. I never dreamed that it could ever be that hot around there. When I arrived over 2 weeks ago, the weather was amazingly beautiful, then it gradually became warmer. I ended up having to return to Arizona to cool off!

Our pups are staying home in the AC.
No doggy car trips of any kind in this weather. Much to the disappointment of Wyatt McRiot who loves the trip to the dump. He doesn't get to go this week. I notice that his favorite sun bath was cut very short yesterday and he was ready to come back inside the house very quickly.
On the plus side, my tomato plants seem to be enjoying it. On the negative side, the weeds are also enjoying it enthusiastically. All the neighbors are out mowing at 7Am when it was already 80 degrees.

Yup.
No car trips for my dog either!
He's the first dog I've owned who obviously hates the heat. All my other dogs have always taken it as it comes, but this one lets me know when he ha shad enough and wants in.
Since he's learned how to open the door to the deck outside, if I don't let him in, he will fiddle around until he gets the door open.
I don't want him to know how to do that reliably, so I always let him in as soon as he rings the doorbell.
When I got my two rescues, I headed out to Lowe's, (they give a 10% discount for veterans), to purchase a new back door that has a 'doggie door flap' at the bottom. Took about ten minutes to teach them how to use it and they now come and go at will. Today . . . they are staying inside where it is much, much cooler.
I taught them by pushing them out the flap, then holding it up part way and enticing them to come back in with the offer of a treat in my extended hand. Immediately turn them around and push them back out again and repeat. About 5-10 minutes the one day and just a few minutes the next morning and they got it down. For awhile, they were so enthusiastic that they would tear off across the room and hit the flap with a flying leap.
Replacement door was expensive, but I don't need to constantly watch them to see if they want to go out. Only downside is that I'm limited to a dog less than about 25-30 pounds. New door has a window that can be opened. That's come in handy these past few nights after the sun goes down.
We and the pups are holed up in a motel with A/C for the next few days-- no A/C at the house. We had to go shopping in Sandpoint yesterday, and one of us stayed in the car with the pups and the A/C running while the other went shopping. It's an adventure, for sure. We thought of going to Schweizer, too, but the thought of potentially being stuck in a line of cars going up the mountain is pretty repulsive. Volo, bring extra water!
I think this is the hottest day so far since moving to NID. Similar to the summers in the SoCal desert but feels a lot worse with the humidity. Didn't want A/C for my house since it's insulated pretty well. So far it's hit 113* but it's still going up. Inside temperature isn't too bad. Was going to do the 2 mile round trip jog to the mailbox a little while ago but decided to just ride the bike. Too hot and humid to run.
My shop is really well insulated (did it myself) so it's stays amazingly cool in there:

.........Also, it seems to me that this year will be a horrible year for wild berries like huckleberries and dewberries ......
108 degrees at my house yesterday.
This kind of heat makes for the very best strawberries. Unfortunately, this kind of heat means that no one is willing to go outside and pick them.
There was a short human interest on the local news about a U-pick strawberry field in Spokane where all the berries were ripe and ready and no one would pick them.
I makes me sorry I never got any strawberry plants planted. Great strawberries is going to be a side effect of this heat wave.
You did a good job! Made me look at the humidity... At 50 pet cent in Spokane, that's not high, but it's not low like the desert for sure.
Where are you finding 50 percent humidity in Spokane? Is this in the morning? Or indoors? I’ve been seeing humidity like at 13 percent and today’s forecast is for 23 percent. At least high humidity if we got it would help with fires.
