I just went to Aldi for the first time in a really long time. I bought a bag full of stuff, 99% refrigerated items and produce (15 items, things like cucumbers, herbs, spinach, shredded cheese, charcuterie, asparagus). I couldn't believe when the cashier said the total was $27. That does not happen anywhere else. In this economy, it is an extremely attractive place to shop, especially in Florida where wages are still way too low for the cost of living. Now that they have self checkout and there's no more long lines, I will be going there A LOT!

Not all of them have self checkout. My local one frequently has extremely long lines. I saw a super Aldi in Charlotte that put the ones here to shame. They are OK for certain items. It is certainly not the be all, end all. Its around 50 minutes round trip for me to get to the closest one, so I don't shop there often, I much prefer Trader Joes which is much closer and has at least a dozen items, I cannot do without. Guacamole, Organic Eggs, Slivered Almonds, Frozen whole grain waffles, low fat cheese puffs, pita crackers, frozen breaded fish, Argentinian red shrimp, salt brownies, organic lemonade, chicken soup, organic red pepper and tomato soup, low fat chicken sausages and wild caught salmon.

I can pretty much get most of what you listed at my ALDI. The ones where I live are newer, larger stores and are great places to shop.

I remember that for a long time many Americans resisted the Aldi model. Stores were messy, dingy, you have to have a quarter for a cart, no bags, limited selection of items, even more limited customer service (if you can actually find an employee). This euro grocery model has caught on! Now all of a sudden everyone is shopping there it seems. Americans love cheap.

The other german grocer Lidl is having a tougher time attracting US shoppers.

Meanwhile the future of the traditional supermarket seems fuzzy.

That is what it is like at the store by me. I won't ever go back.

The ones I have been to are severely lacking in the organic department. I’ve not seen good pasture raised eggs there, nor a good selection of organic produce. As for wild salmon, anything decent? How about sockeye?
I’ll give it another go I guess, but I’m not a fan of the bagged, vacuum sealed fish portions that are found in the frozen aisle.

The new ones where I shop offer steelhead trout (which I love and am cooking right now) and different types of salmon and are vacuum sealed but not frozen. I have found them to be of great quality.

ALDI is just a much smaller store and will not offer everything you want, but it is a great place to stock up on your basics and even some things you can't find at other stores. I always do 50% ALDI and later in the week the rest from Publix or elsewhere.

I sincerely doubt it, maybe a few things like Extra large Organic Eggs, pita crackers and salmon. The other things are superior to any I can find anywhere else and I have tried them all. I went to a brand new Super Aldi in Charlotte with self checkouts and it was twice the size of the one here in Florida and I didn't find one single item that I buy at Trader Joes.
