Can you shave Jack? Might be the least stressful way to get the mats off of him. I imagine that he is growling because, at some point, the brushing hurt him (probably because of the mats, which makes sense).

That's what I want done (shaving). I can't shave Jack (or rather not as I have never used a shaver before) but a groomer could. That's what I want because Jack's hair is poodle hair, long and wiry. Yes, I think the brush hurts him because it pulls his hair. Gave Jack a bath last night and used lots of conditioner which helps the mats. Thanks!

Thank you! No one wanted to adopt him and his owner was going to have Jack put down until I took him. I love this dog so much!

I have rescued many older dogs in this situation. Over time they became wonderful, grateful companions. I wish there were more people like you in the world!
