College football and men's basketball just need to leave/break away from the NCAA, then have all the schools go back to their previous/regional conferences to play all the other sports!

The Atlantic Coast Conference is expanding from it's Eastern roots. The ACC presidents and chancellors met Friday morning and voted to add three schools- Stanford, Cal and SMU, the conference announced. It will bring the league to 18 members-17 will play football full time in the league. The additions are in all sports and will begin in the 2024-25 school year.

LKC, already beat me to the punch about the breaking story. What is Oregon state and Washington State (PAC 2?) to do? Maybe they join the Mountain West and call it a day. No way can they stay out there by their lonesome.

Rick Neuheisel on XM a week or so ago was talking about where stuff seems to be headed, and he brought up good points about funding, Title IX, etc. that 95% of college sports fans couldn’t grasp. Wish I could remember what he said.

Later on the same station, an ex-FB player (both college & NFL) was asked if a hypothetical college FB union would voluntarily give up some money that they generated to help fund softball, track, rowing, lacrosse, field hockey, tennis, WBB, baseball, etc. He laughed and said of course not.

And yet again, College football needs to become its own entity. There's no reason the other sports have to get dragged into this nonsense.
There really is no point to it. It's all about $ now. Geography also does not matter either.

The ACC did this for stability. Cal and Stanford were the best options left to add. You know that Florida State, Clemson, and maybe others are going to try and leave the ACC ASAP. The three more schools gives the league the option to still be competitive when this takes place. The ACC was the next P5 league to start the dissolution process. Here, it saves itself.

Also, SMU is not taking any media revenue for 9-10 years. Cal and Stanford receive 30% for 7 years, then it ups to 60% thru 9 years. They finally get 100% in year 10. That is a benefit for the existing schools. But now with the additions, the league can possibly renegotiate the tv contracts.

One reason ACC added Stanford, Cal & SMU is ESPN’s media rights deal w/ACC allows ESPN to renegotiate if league drops below 15 members, with potential future departures of FSU, Clemson & UNC - all who voted against expansion - ACC wanted to get P5 schools now opposed to G5 schools later to maintain required membership number.

They'll be fine. They'll just reach out to the old money bubbas who got them the death penalty 35 years ago to fund the team because it's not against the rules anymore.

There will not be a renegotiation of the existing contract. So in the grand scheme of things the net increase for the existing schools is extremely small. ESPN has the ACC locked until 2036 at a bargain. That is why FSU and others will leave. ESPN has no desire to pay more for the ACC.

If the ACC falls below 15 schools, ESPN can renegotiate. That is one reason why this expansion occurred. It also leaves room for greedy Florida State and Clemson to leave that would not impact the ACC's media deal.

Madness. This re-alignment has gone from bad to worse.

I can hope that some day we'll have a West coast conference again, but I suspect that will take a long time due to the television contracts.
