It's not the system that requires it, it's the vehicle. And if the key is actually inserted rather than the newer keyless entry types, there's more to it than simply taping a key near the ignition.

Only the one on my GTO needed a spare key, (the only vehicle I've owned with theft deterrent keys) and it took some trial and error to get it right. When I had mine done, there were no modules for OEM theft deterrent keys for my car. There was some soldering, a relay, and some other odds and ends necessary to make it work. My current vehicles both have Vipers alarm/remote starters. Viper hadn't seen a GTO when I had mine put in.

I was an installer in the late 80's/early 90's, and did a few of these. Now I pay someone else, but keep my eyes and hands on the process, so I know what's been done. I worked in the home A/V side of the company that did my GTO, and even at that some of the work was halfass. It took me a while to get it straightened out. Sad.
