Nice get Austin! Was pretty much unofficially official until now:

Quote:
Tesla is moving its headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin, Texas, CEO Elon Musk announced at the company’s shareholder meeting on Thursday.

The meeting took place at Tesla’s vehicle assembly plant under construction outside of Austin on a property that borders the Colorado River, near the city’s airport.
However, the company plans to increase production in its California plant regardless of the headquarters move.

“To be clear we will be continuing to expand our activities in California,” Musk said. “Our intention is to increase output from Fremont and Giga Nevada by 50%. If you go to our Fremont factory it’s jammed.”

But, he added, “It’s tough for people to afford houses, and people have to come in from far away....There’s a limit to how big you can scale in the Bay Area.”

I was thinking he wouldn’t move the HQ because the local talent in Palo Alto significantly exceeds our own but it would make sense to continue to grow operations there and absorb the talent of California while taking advantage of HQ tax benefits in TX.

Disagree that Palo Alto talent significantly exceeds that of Austin. There have been decades of innovation that happened here, and in other parts of Texas, it’s just not as well known outside the profession.

Maybe, Palo Alto is a much bigger innovation hub though. We are still a mix of operations and innovation. It also has access to Stanford University which is on the same tier as Harvard and to a lesser extent, UC Berkeley. Palo Alto also has avg salaries that are about $40k higher than Austin, although that’s nowhere near enough to close the gap in the extreme CoL differences.

My one neighbor who works at the figs factory just shared this with us. I guess I really do need to start thinking about moving back to San Antonio over the summer, there’s no way I’ll be able to afford Austin with this latest influx of high paying tech jobs.

78724 isn’t where I want to be in Austin and I’m not in a financial space to buy. I will be renting for quite some time. When I moved to my place I was the first person to live in my unit. It was $1450. My same floor plan without a yard is $1625 now. There’s no way I will be able to afford anything reasonably safe and near work with the number of people and increase in income. The city loses way too many good people this way (and I’m not putting myself in that category). I hope Elon helps the affordability in someway (mostly with funds for affordable housing in the form of charitable giving)…but I highly doubt it.
