Yeah, that was me who suggested it, but I suggested that they could use it to show some artsy projection on it, the way sxsw uses certain walls like it to show something cool. I personally don't think graffiti would look entirely nice there... or, who knows maybe it would look cool.

Graffiti art could look good there since vines will take so long to grow on such a tall wall. If it's eventually covered up, what can you do, but what until then? Have a contest for best design, and the winner gets to showcase his/her art.

To Austinites... any building that goes up looks like Dallas.

Is there anywhere where you can see at the proposed designs for any of these buildings?

On SSP someone took a picture of the "Great Wall of Pure Uglyness" of the new Hyatt a couple days ago. It would take a lot of vines. Someone said they plan on putting the Hyatt logo on there. Others are suggesting they hire some of the graffiti artist to go to town on it, but fear if they do that then the graffiti would become to popular and no one would be allowed to build on the spot next to it and cover it up.

I think I saw that posted on SSP or Shag? Didn't you also have a good one from the old Breckenridge Hospital? The original one that was there before the current one that they now want to tier down was built? Or maybe that was The General who posted that one?

Oh, ok. Thanks. That makes sense. It is going to be right next to the Railroad Commission. And I think that is the RR Commission right between the Well Fargo which is on 15th street and the Cambridge which is on MLK.
While bad, the Hyatt building isn't as hideous as the new court house that's going up by Republic Square.

You probably don't know that I used to live in Dallas.

Still have friends and family there, too.

Still think it looks like Dallas back in the day.

What time period are you referring to? I'd like to see photos then.

What I was meaning to suggest is there are all these "nimbys" who suggest comparing it to Dallas skyline as if its such a bad thing. I disagree with that mindset.

I don't think you can compare these renderings to any real city since like the OP mentioned, they are just rectangles not the actual designs. They serve the purpose of providing scale dimensions and location only.

There are thousands of cities in the world with big buildings but the design elements can very much set them apart from each other. Or not. For example, the Dallas skyline is much more interesting than Houston's even though Houston is a much larger city (interesting lighting helps a lot). The bland 1980s perfect rectangular glass structures in Houston are just too repetitive. There isn't enough curvature to add variety.

There seems to be some interesting designs in the works for Austin, which resemble some of the modern Asian cities. We'll see!
