DISCHARGED FIRE EXTINGUISHER BOTTLE WHICH CAUSED ENG TO SHUT DOWN, BUT VIBRATION CONTD. UNSURE OF EXTENT OF DMG TO LDG GEAR DOORS, PILOT DELAYED RETRACTING GEAR. UPON SEEING A/C WOULD NOT CLIMB OR ACCELERATE, PILOT RETRACTED FLAP AND GEAR. KEPT SPEED BELOW 180 TO REDUCE VIBRATION. A/C MADE EMERGENCY LDG AT JFK. FOUND 20X36 INCH DEPRESSION ON RT SIDE OF NOSE BEHIND RADOME. MAX DEPTH 3-4 INCHES. STRINGERS IN DEPRESSED AREA WERE DEFORMED AND CRACKED. IMPACT MARKS ON RT WING AT 15 AND 18 FT OTBD FROM FUSELAGE AND BLOOD ON RT WING ROOT. RT ENG COWL RING WAS SPLATTERED WITH BLOOD AND 1 FAN BLADE WAS SEPARATED FROM THE FAN DISK AT THE ROOT. REMAINING BLADES WERE DEFORMED AND HAD LE IMPACT DMG. THE CONTAINMENT RING FOR THE FAN WAS PENETRATED BY A 9"X2" HOLE. ADDITIONAL HOLES IN ENG COWLING FWD OF CONTAINMENT RING. L SHAPED PENETRATION OF FUSELAGE. BLADE THAT PENETRATED FUSELAGE WAS NOT FOUND. ID BY SMITHSONIAN. PAX WERE BUSED BACK TO LGA AND PUT ON OTHER FLTS. FLT ATTENDANT REPORTED A LOUD BOOM AND ENTIRE A/C BEGAN TO VIBRATE EXCESSIVELY, WHOLE AFT SECTION FELT AS IF IT WAS ABOUT TO BREAK OFF. CAPT SAID THEY HAD LOST AN ENG. OXYGEN MASKS IN LAST ROW FELL OUT. PILOTS RECEIVED AWARD FOR THEIR SUPERIOR AIRMANSHIP DURING A CATASTROPHIC ENG FAILURE. NTSB INVESTIGATED.POSSIBILITY A/C WAS DAMAGED BEYOND REPAIR.
