The Coffin School was built on the Wood River on the W. Bar Ranch in 1884. It was named because Alfred Nower cut his leg while cutting wood - and subsequently died of gangrene.

As you noted, it is currently an exhibit at the Old Trail Town on the outskirts of Cody.

Rescue you are up that was the info I was looking for. (kind of a morbid reason to name a school, huh?)

At least he got a coffin. Lots of guys back then got wrapped in blankets and dumped in a ravine. Kinda like what the mafia does in holes all over the desert outside Las Vegas.

Somewhere in Wyoming there is a hike known as 'Coney.' Where is it and what is its starting elevation? (A friend of mine from DC wants to come out for a stroll...)

Are you referring to the Coney Lake Area Trail near Sheridan starting at 8,600 ft elevation with a 700 ft total climb in elevation?

Close enough...

Coney Creek Trail is located in the Cloud Peak Wilderness area of the Big Horn Mountains. The trailhead is about 8960 ft in elevation, but we gained and lost more than a thousand feet over the six miles we hiked. The Forest Service rate the trail as 'Moderate.'

A friend from Maryland (elev: 244 ft) actually flew out and hiked it with me to acclimate himself to hikes at elevation. Then he drove across Wyoming to the Tetons and spent a week hiking there.

You're up, KynaMH!

Thank you for giving me credit, even though I wasn't quite right. I'll ask an easy one (since I'm no Wyoming expert): which other State shares Nephritic Jade as it's State Gem?
