I just thought I'd post something I read recently, since it pertains to a phrase occasionally mentioned on this thread: Duct tape.
"duck tape: Is it duct tape, or duck tape? Modern usage varies. However, duck -- so called because of its dun color and waterproof quality -- tape is the older form, brought from military into civilian usage during World War II. Since ductwork requires sealants such as duck tape, the name was transferred, and the two forms have appeared side by side since the 1950s."
I guess I'm going to stop making fun of people who say "duck tape."

Something I keep seeing lately that's starting to drive me a little crazy. We get people, in my case on the New Jersey forum, who are planning to move to the state and are asking advice on where to live. But they don't ask where they can live. They ask where they can "stay". "I've got a job in X-Town starting next month and I need to know where the best place is for me to stay. I can pay $1500 in rent."
To me, a place to stay is for a temporary situation. You stay at a hotel. You don't stay at your address. You live there.
