Keep in mind that spelling was not standardized then. Even people we would consider accomplished writers might not always spell a word the same. In fact, a person might not always spell his own name the same way.
Noah Webster's first dictionary came out in 1806, and his expanded version was published in 1828. Old Noah set the ball rolling for standard American English.

Yes, "regiment" and "regime" are often erroneously used instead of "regimen."
People talking about their exercise "regime," so many times I've seen that written.
