I hear you. When I worked full time and had to be mom the rest of the day into the night it was not easy. I loved it though. Earning money for the family was awesome after not working outside the house. I can't wait to do it again.

Mine is grown now. Still living at home, but rarely around. Like ships that pass in the night.
I work because that's what adults have to do if they're not home taking care of dependents or counting their inheritance or lottery wins.
I never thought about "should I work." It's like the air we breathe- you have to work. I do fear that women often make limited choices because of a subconscious assumption that their primary life will be home-with-kids. Even it they do spend years home with kids, there's a whole lot of years to follow. And the dearest husband can get laid off, ill, hit by truck (and the less dear can leave).
I bet there are plenty of women who, later in life, wish they'd spend "more time at the office."
Living frugally is fine. Not being able to get your teeth fixed or new glasses is feeling poor.
