I've worked in drilling rig derricks for over 10 years. You have to ensure your tied off with a harness and lanyard, and really after awhile you get used to it.
It would be a drag to have to climb that far on a ladder tho.
well i build houses for a living..(big houses) so heights dont bother me , although i am never as high up in the air as in that picture. but for the right amount of money i would totally do it
Based on the photo, this looks like they are on the famous radio / TV transmission tower above the Empire State building in NYC. Yes, that's the tower King Kong was hanging on to in the movie. No kidding, the tower was originally intended to be a a mast that a giant Zepplin dirgible could "dock" to and somehow discharge passengers (at that height??). Talk about a crazy idea, they quickly changed it to a radio broadcast tower after the Hindenburg exploded in Lindhurst.
No other building in midtown has a tower anywhere close to the height of the Empire State building, which is now loaded up with transmitters, post 9/11. (For anyone not familiar with NYC, the majority of TV + radio transmitters in NY-NJ metro area used to be at top of north tower of WTC).
Although the Empire State Building will sway slightly in strong winds, those guys up in this tower are much better off than the ones that have to climb up those skinny little radio-tv towers scattered around the midwest. Some of those are over 1000 feet off the ground, there's no elevator to the 101st floor, and they sway almost like being on a ship.
OMG... just looking at that made me all dizzy & nauseous!! I'm terribly afraid of heights, unless it's in a secure inside area (like an airplane, and strangely I'm fine with roller-coasters & rides). So no, you couldn't pay me enough to do that job!
