Dear Glen,
Leaves will begin to change in Asheville after the 15th and usually end before Halloween. Maybe include a drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway for leaf vistas, but it will be crowded this time of year with tourists. Leaves change quicker at higher elevations.
Hot Springs is very pretty to visit, but no good for commuting to UNCA because of altitude and winding roads. By the way, Applachian Trail hikers go right thru there.
Waynesville, long ago I commuted from Asheville to there once a week, not a bad ride, all freeway. It is actually West of Asheville. Livable town, cute shops, mountain feel. Canton and Clyde are basically crossroads.
Mars Hill, quickest commute to Asheville if you insist on living outside of Buncombe County. Smaller than Waynesville, larger than Hot Springs, centered around the college there, relatively close to Wolf Laurel Ski Resort.
To Craig in Mars Hill:
You got to try the restaurant Weaverville Milling Company, a real treasure.
