It's been so cold today, it's awful. High of only 14C makes it the coldest day since 29th May. I've actually had my heating on all afternoon. Not good at all.
It felt refreshing to me when the sun was out this morning, but now it's cloudy it feels somewhat unpleasant, and I feel pretty cold right now on the computer.
At least I put it on (to get the temperature up to about 19°C which took hours) and there were intermittent sparkling fizzing noises coming from it, then when I unplugged it the plug was red hot to the touch. Is that normal?

No it is not. You should treat this heater as an extreme fire risk - unplug it and take it back to place of purchase, if still new. Plugs should never feel hot to the touch, and sparks are never a good sign.
