I can relate to your joy. I hate having the house closed up for days or weeks during the summer.

No point in having this awful heat/humidity when all it does is force people indoors or into hospitals.
I thought I had experienced it bad in VIC but this one really took the cake!
Never want to go through it ever again.
Thankfully this isn’t likely to occur again in years to come.
Happening during a wet “La Nina” pattern makes it all the more unusual.
We’ve done very badly this time around from late January onwards, El Nino, I think now, has brought much better and heavier rains to us!
It were good in A/C places but stepping outside - oh man, wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy!

I have some partial daily records for Ch'ch Aero (1954-2007) - if you require 30C or more, then 3 consecutive days occurred in January 1956 (twice) and January 2004. Ch'ch Gardens has a longer record and is a little warmer than the Aero site. If you took a different count of "non-cool" consecutive days, say 20C or more, some numbers would look quite good (I haven't got time to check that out at present).

Still, that pales in comparison to London at a much higher latitude. Continental influence?

That, and the Gulf Stream perhaps. But you can have London's dirty air and cloudiness.

It's a damn site cleaner air if you live west of London as when I was in Windsor.

I'd take that area of England over NZ anyday, much better summers for its latitude, and also 2-3 times the no. of T-storms.

You'd still never see skies with anything like the clarity of ours. I was just talking to someone from Bath who has been in NZ for about 6 months now. Says it's marvellous to get away from population pressure and "chemtrails".

Chemtrails = myth.

But otherwise yes I can see that the air quality would be better in NZ. But anyway, air quality in Buxton in very good even if our climate is crap. Buxton used to be a "health resort" cos of it.

I think I would take a better summer over a better summer per latitude. The lower South Island is comparable to the North and Scotland in summer, but I think the rest of NZ would typically be warmer and sunnier for longer. There are some decent heatwaves in the UK at times though, which I envy.
There are plenty of Brits who have settled here, and I don't think I've meet any who prefer a UK summer
