Well... it's the day of the start of the thaw, so we'll see how much of that Buxton ice melts. Then, high pressure develops, so while it gets cold again, not so much of the snow/ice

I read somewhere that after this brief thaw, the cold weather will stick around through Christmas. Have you heard anything about that?

Not too bothered if the pressure stays high for long, but in reality nobody can be sure of what next the winter will bring. I'm fairly used to ice and snow living in Buxton anyway, it can just get inconvenient at times.
I guess cold winters are a novelty to people in the UK living at sea level locations and in the south, I'm quite used to them up here, where it's always 2°C cooler than even surrounding sea level areas and on average 4°C colder than the Berkshire area I grew up in.
Talking of Christmas though, last christmas we had a white christmas here with 6 inches of snow on the ground and snowfall in the evening, and that wasn't the first in the area since I moved here in 2003.
27 C / 80 F here at 10:40 AM. Nothing but blue sky above -- yesterdays clouds have shifted towards the horizon. Could we possibly break the 30 C barrier today?
I'm happy to have fast new computer finally back online with CD.
