Now THAT is great October weather. Apparently it's also a national record for the earliest -25F ever (lower 48). Those lucky sons of guns out in the intermountain west are always stealing the good weather.
Also far too many cold records broken in BC to list; I counted 33 of them. As with Alberta, some records were smashed by huge margins. Of note, Puntzi Mountain (-25.3°C) broke the old record by more than 12 degrees Celsius (records there since 1959). Merritt (-15.5°C) broke a 101-year-old record by almost 7 degrees Celsius.
Potomac Montana shared a picture of this morning's low temperature: -29°F!According to records, this is 1 degree shy of the all-time October record for Montana that was set at the Marias Summit Cooperative Station on October 31, 1935 https://twitter.com/NWSGlasgow/statu...767398912?s=20

The Twitter post says "This very well could be the coldest temperature in the United States today!" but they're selling themselves short: it's probably the coldest temperature in North America today.
Not only that, it's likely to be the first -30°C reading of the season anywhere in North America this season.
Eureka, Nunavut--the usual champion in this sort of thing--scored their first such reading by sinking to -30.4°C at 1000h local this morning (0900h Missoula time) i.e., probably after the Montana reading.
Unreal that a place at 1,100 m and 46°N could reach such a threshold before a place at 85°N or a place at 4,300 m. Are we sure it's accurate? There's a lot of crazy people with an agenda to push in Montana.

We had an early morning high of 73°F today, which occurred at midnight. That's 13°F below average and our first sub 80°F high since Apr 13th! It's 66°F now, temp should hold steady the next 10 to 12 hrs then start dropping again, should have an evening low between 55°F and 60°F, avg low is 62°F
SUMMARY...Mixed winter precipitation, including sleet, will continue
for the next several hours from the southern TX Panhandle through
western/central OK and into south-central KS. Lightning and
relatively high precipitation may occur within the stronger cells.
DISCUSSION...Regional radar imagery has shown an increase in
precipitation coverage over the last few hours. This increase is
likely the result of persistent isentropic ascent across the shallow
front as well as strengthening large-scale ascent attendant to an
approaching shortwave trough. Thus far, a predominantly banded
precipitation structure has been observed, but radar trends across
the east-central and southeast TX Panhandle suggest a transition to
a more uniform precipitation shield may be occurring. Elevated
instability has contributed to lightning within a few of these
bands, particularly on the leading edge of the precipitation
(currently from SNK northeastward through TUL and into far southeast
KS).
Given the expectation for continued ascent across the front and the
radar trends suggesting higher precipitation coverage, the potential
for freezing rain and sleet will continue from the southern TX
Panhandle across western/central OK into south-central/southeast KS.
Modest instability will contribute to occasionally stronger
convection capable of lightning and relatively high precipitation
rates throughout the morning.
W.O.W! Rapid City normal high is upper 50s. They haven't been above freezing in 5 days. What?!
Yesterdays max was 17°F, well below the normal low.
Only 1 in last 8 days above 34°. WHAT?!
Number of times on record this cold before Oct 26th... 0
