New NAM is so rediculous why am i even showing it? Some people will take it as a lock in forecast.

NAM snowfall total from latest run.

Basically rains for 9hrs then snows hard for 18hrs. Storm stops and keeps spinning off the coast as cold air crashes in.

Nutso run as far as snow totals.

Models are tools, you cant ignore but you have to make a call using them. Look for trends. Wonder what some NWS offices are saying!

One of my favorite atmospheric features is going to happen. It's not always we get this overhead but its not uncommon for sure. Upper Level Low. (ULL)

It's basically a storm in the upper level of the atmosphere. This large rotating vortex creates so much instability at the surface. Cool looking clouds, heavy precip rates in certain spots, on off snow showers or rain if warm.

Without saying much more....take a look.

1st I want to show a still image and explain it......

When watching the loop below watch that California Upper Low. Watch where it goes. It doesn't stay closed but the energy and the Jet stream kink heads towards the great lakes.. Meanwhile strong Northern Jet stream energy coming down will merge with it. It creates a new Upper Low over the Great Lakes and watch where it goes!

Also take note as you watch the loop the Southeast ridge tries to pop north but gets squashed by this incoming kink in the Jet stream. It eventually flexes back north once this ULL leaves the East coast.

Lastly... 7pm Thursday its over the Great Lakes. 7pm Friday its still off the coast. 24hrs!

Here it is... watch it several times. Watch all the moving pieces and how it all comes together.

So fascinating watching how events happen. Unlike the surface details, this is pretty on target with what will happen. Exact location of the center of this ULL can still change.

Not enough kink in the upper levels to bring me any real rain.

If this was the final result, Binghamton would win the poll. 3-4 days out still.

Even a quarter of this would be a disrputive storm. But seriously!!!! Over 2 feet of snow from Albany to Buffalo!!!??! Over 3 feet around Rochester?!?!? What is the NAM doing?

It typically has a wet bias but I've seen storms in recent years it's been the right one or close. Not saying this one will be. I haven't gotten around to checking the latest with this storm this morning.

Wonder what NWS forecasters are saying.

Right now it looks like Chicagoland will be cut right in the middle between rain and snow
