Overcast here this afternoon with some showers. Temp got up to 64F but dropped to 59F with the showers.

Forecast looks fairly wet.

DISCUSSION...
Radar has been more active than expected today with light showers
streaming in from the southwest on the leading edge of the upper
level system that will be influencing the area over the next
couple of days. Forecast soundings this afternoon are still
showing a fairly deep layer of dry air from the surface to about
8k ft. In fact, most guidance doesn`t show real significant
saturation until tomorrow morning. So while the showers are
expected to continue through the night, they`re likely going to
remain generally on the light side.

Sunday looks like a continuation of the same as the axis of the
upper level system moves just to the south of the area along the
northern gulf coast. As the trough departs, the area is going to
be left in a very moist environment Sunday evening and night, but
with no real lift to be found, only a few isolated showers are
expected. Diurnal heating Monday will provide the warmth and
instability necessary for thunderstorms.

A cold front will approach the area Tuesday with guidance still
in pretty good agreement about a squall line developing and moving
through the area during the early to mid afternoon hours. Forecast
soundings indicating low end CAPE along with some decent
directional shearing, but as is usually the case around here,
limited instability will keep the severe chances marginal at best
as the line moves through. In fact SPC`s 3 day convective outlook
keeps even the marginal risk well to the north of our area at this
point.

Behind the front, cooler and drier air will filter into the region
for the latter part of the week. Return flow sets up by Friday
which will increase moisture and rain chances across the area for
the weekend. The cold front that was being advertised by long
range guidance yesterday for next weekend is gone or pushed even
further down the road so temperatures will moderate late in the
period.

It looks pretty warm according to most forecasts for the next 10 days here, but the 12z GFS gave me a nice fantasy snowstorm on March 13.

Boston's max temp was 21° today. Normal is 41°.

Last time they had a day this cold IN MARCH was 1967.

And imagine if there was a snowpack. Impressive air mass for March.

Portland Maine max temp today was 17°. Last time with a day this cold in March was 1984.

Interesting. Check out March 1980 here - it didn't reach 20º until the 3rd.

F***. The temp is down to 9. Please don't drop to below 7 or at least stay above 5. I want to experience a 7B winter and the 3rd highest record low ever. A low of 2,3,or 4 is no more interesting cold wise than 7 and having normal above average record low as opposed to a near record one is much less interesting. And I like cold, but I don't give a S*** if the lowest temp is 3 instead of 7, both are cold but 3 isn't anything more interesting and is a normal temperature we hit all the time.

I second this.

Being used to more continental weather, it's often surprising to me just how hard it is for any appreciably cold air to penetrate into the Mid-Atlantic (and the immediate coast up to Boston or so). For instance, there are 25-year-olds in NYC who have only seen 0F a couple of times (1994 and (I think) 2016); 25-year-olds in the El Paso area (though not the airport itself) have done about as well, having seen 0F a couple times in 2011.

Granted, El Paso is at 3700 feet but it no doubt would blow some people's minds that parts of the Northeast don't see bitterly cold temperatures much more often than relatively-low-lying areas of the Mexican border do. Of course El Paso's winters average far warmer than NYC's (58/32 vs. 38/27 in January), so you'll have a much more wintry winter in NYC in any event. Also El Paso's stereotypically desert-like large daily range helps a lot, keeping its average January nights only 5F warmer than NYC's.

What this demonstrates of course is the power of geography; if you doubt it consult a hardiness zone map. Much of Texas isn't too different from the coastal Northeast between Washington and Boston in that respect; higher altitude and a more interior location determine that.
Yes and look how impressive this is: The Panhandle got snow in MAY in 2013! https://www.wunderground.com/history...eqdb.wmo=99999 Its amazing how far south that cold weather can reach even in late spring.

Didn't get a chance to post today, but I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the cold temperatures. High was only 28 F/-2 C and right now it's 12 F/-11 C. NWS is calling for a low of -2 F/-19 C tonight!

Local ski resorts opened back up. A little bonus after an otherwise terrible season.
