Heat wave next weekend? So we gotta wait another 8 days to pass 30s?

Did things trend colder next week? I thought low 40s for 1-2 days at least before the next arctic blast mid week.

Good news is... No big rain storms or big warm surges so no major flooding.
Bad news is... not much melting going on and we are refreezing at night.

Good news is... Farms and Gardens love the snowpack
Bad news is .... All that snow north of us could mean river flooding in April or May

Good news is ... I see light after next week with some warm days coming
Bad news is .. Its long range and little more snow coming Saturday

Top 5:

March 16th- 25 F
January 9th- 27 F
January 10th- 27 F
December 10th- 27 F
What's the latest you've had your coldest low of winter?

Here's since 2000 here.

Winter '16-'17: 46 F on January 8th
Winter '15-'16: 44 F on January 24th
Winter '14-'15: 39 F on February 20th
Winter '13-'14: 39 F on January 19th
Winter '12-'13: 44 F on March 4th
Winter '11-'12: 42 F on January 3rd/4th
Winter '10-'11: 35 F on December 14th (I lived much further out west at the time, I could easily believe it was around freezing at my old place, lots of frost everywhere)
Winter '09-'10: 34 F on January 10th/11th - same as above. Lived much further out west. Also of note: It dropped to 39 F on March 5th that year!
Winter '08-'09: 36 F on February 5th
Winter '07-'08: 37 F on January 3rd (I lived in GA at this time) It dropped to 53 F on April 16th in 2008! Nowhere close to the coldest low, but low 50s in mid April is notable.
Winter '06-'07: 39 F on February 17th (it dropped to 44 F on November 22nd this year)
Winter '05-'06: 41 F on February 14th
Winter '04-'05: 42 F on January 24th
Winter '03-'04: 44 F on December 18th
Winter '02-'03: 34 F on January 24th
Winter '01-'02: 39 F on January 4th
Winter '00-'01: 36 F on January 5th
Winter '99-'00: 39 F on January 27th

So the latest in the past 18 years has been March 4th in 2013. In the last 18 years, January had the coldest low 11 times, February has had it 4 times, December 2 times, and March 1 time. So January is overwhelmingly the most likely month to have the coldest low.

Looking back through 1980 at MIA, the latest I could find was March 16, 1988 when it dropped to 44 F. Wouldn't surprise me if it occurred later beforehand, would be interesting to see if it's ever occurred in April. I remember a few years back I believe Longyearbyen had its coldest low of the cold season on April 27th or something like that ridiculous seasonal delay there.

Some things of note:

During the '79-'80 cold season: The lowest low was 32 F on March 3rd. That's 10 F colder than any other temp that occurred in the December-February period, and 20 F colder than any temp in December. Matter of fact, the high that day (53 F) was nearly the same as the lowest low of December 1979 (which was 52 F).

On April 1 and 5, 1987 it dropped to 48 F on both mornings which are the 5th coldest readings of the '86-'87 season, also 11 F colder than any reading in December. The 64 F high on April 7, 1987 was tied for the third coldest high of the winter, matter of fact looks like the first week of April that year was potentially the coldest week of the cold season.

Actually I think this might be an interesting idea for a thread.

What's interesting is that despite 0 snowpack, and being further south, it is the southern us not the northern us that is significantly below averages. 2 nights at 24 here and 2 days in the 40s. Tonight looks to be last hard freeze, hopefully for the season. Parts of upstate SC dropped into the teens, record lows probably broken. Record low for today is 20 I believe.

Any explanation for the greater deviation from averages here instead of the snowy north?

Bridgeport had a record cold max temp yesterday. But you're right... looking at the low departures, the SouthEast is more negative than Northeast but the Highs are more negative in the Northeast. Very interesting. Might have to look deeper. High Pressure down there for colder nights and snowpack up here for colder days is my first guess??

Raleigh's departures highlighted.

Mid March sun aint doing squat to melt the snow. Only on blacktops. Layer of ice preserving the 7-8" pack.
Not only is it below freezing here, but it also feels even worse with the wind. My ears feel like icicles if I take down my hood for a minute, that usually only happens when its like -6°C or below, not at -1°C!

Same exact stats here except averages are 63/40 . Record high also recorded in 2016 and same exact temp.

Made it to 41°F here. How nice. Tons of melting going on though, I'm seeing grass now.
