As you may have noticed, you perceive small temperature differences are more significant than a lot of American poster. 3°C (5°F) seems a bit much to call "not quite" but it's getting close to differences lost in day to day variability.
Not accurate. It's happened this past winter, I remember posting it. How do we even do a search for that?
Basically Arctic air comes in and sticks around while the flow at mid or upper level changes and provides clouds. Any low level moisture would do it. I bet you we can find cloudy nights with record lows. Can even happen with a clipper. Arctic air comes in, clipper comes in and you get record or near record cold night with clouds. Not often, but it happens.
Think about an Upper Low too! There isn't much cold air this time but an Upper low can carry very cold air and as always clouds.
Doesn't have to be clear nights to get record cold.
I think even if those nights start cloudy, any of the ones that reach a very cold temperature get a clearing in the skies for at least. Wish it were easy to check.

Remember it gets colder going up so it's not normally that hot. But May is terrible for mountain hiking for the mud and ice reasons. October at the same temperatures is much better. Thank you Upper Low! Snowed in the North Carolina mountains today. Remember that below freezing 5k pocket I showed this morning? It moved over NC as the day went on.
About as good as it gets for early May here. 83 F with a 51 F dew point and clear and sunny. Dew points in the 40s for tomorrow, quite rare in May!
We had that last year at this time of year. Nice treat for May, maybe a bit hotter than ideal but I enjoyed it. A lot more than 50°F and clouds. It almost reached 55°F today!
Lows dews with hot weather is common in late spring, harder to get in summer.
Minimum may high on record for may is 49. Local weatherman said upper 80 s all next week and lows in the upper 60s, only thing I have to look forward to after this crappy day lol.

Yeah, early May is really the last part of spring that "dry season" like weather is likely here. After about May 10 or so, lows below about 65 F are highly unlikely.
BTW, I was going to post a Banner Elk forecast last night showing that snow was possible in the morning. But some people on here may have thought it silly to post such an insignificant weather event lol. I think snow in the NC mountains in May is awesome.

How many times have I said on this forum that the anomalies, usually negative here, are the highest in the world given the latitude? It is very true. The most variable up and down climates on earth right here cause of those two stupid oceans and having a huge landmass straight up to the arctic. Blame it on our geography.
