The UHI doesn't have much effect on a cloudy, rainy day. The biggest effect is felt on clear, dry and windless nights. It affects night time temperatures much more than daytime temps.

Makes sense. Probavly that's why you can walk around NYC in a tank top at night during the summer

Airport is right on the coast in San Diego, so colder ocean water temperatures are more directly at work with onshore flow.

This partly explains why.. The other part is Clouds over San D, sunny over Seattle.

850mb temps (Temps at 5000 feet)

1. See why Minnesota is breaking record highs or near? (warm mid level push north which the air mass has moved East. Remember Alberta had those warm mid level temps?)

2. See why snow fell in TN and NC mountains?
3. See why Southeast is cooler than Upper Mid West?(both areas sunny)
4. See why Coastal CA is cooler than PacNW?

Lets go further up for curiosity..

Darker blues = below freezing and it's no coincidence that's where the Upper Lows are.

9,000 foot temps right now.

By the looks of it, the Northeast has had a much worse start to May than we have had here

Yeah, I think so far this May has been comparable to last December, but wetter and cloudier.

Update...
Duluth now 91° while Richmond 53°

Low 90s! Insane!

Record for month of May is 95° there.

Record for 1st week of May is 88° so Goodbye record. Never been in the 90s this early!

Normal 1st 90° is July 8th.
Earliest hitting 90° is May 14th, 1932
