Another Lake Effect event coming Monday. Isn't it getting too late for these now? Lakes usually frozen by now I think
It was very warm in December, it's only been below freezing for a week now. Only Lake Superior's surface is at freezing temperatures and it hasn't frozen yet:
Lake-effect snow dumped at least 20 cm / 8 in of snow in the capital Helsinki in just 12 hours, causing severe traffic disruptions. The whole of the southern coast got significant snowfall. Check out the Europe thread for links to pictures: https://www.city-data.com/forum/42603991-post2442.html
A few days ago small areas on the western coast got massive localised lake-effect snow. Sadly on the heaviest area there's no weather stations, but FMI meteorologists had to drive to the spot to record the snow depth. A record-breaking 73 cm / 28.7 in rise of the snow depth in 24 hours.
