quick question. that's a 850 mb map. doesn't that mean it is showing temps at 5000 feet up?
Yup. Its used to see the pattern and since the surface reflects it you can figure out what the temps would be. I cheat and just look at surface temp maps but sometimes you'll hear NWS discussions say things like 850mb will be -10C so that supports highs in the 20s. Ect.ect

Will that makes me breath a sigh of relief, it would mean temps that are far warmer that's for sure. Not that they will be warm but it wont be anywhere like that.

Sometimes more useful than surface temperatures as the diurnal cycle is damped and small microclimate effects are removed. Same 850 mb with sun produced different surface conditions with clouds, but it gives a general indication of the "warmth" of the airmass.
50s and overcast today. I'm liking that trend of NW wind flows from Monday-Thursday morning. This is pretty much the only way to get continuous below average weather down here.
