Quite a pleasant New Years Day here sunny and 28.5C. Has been 33 days since Perth has recorded any rain but still a long way off the record of 83 days. Hasn't been overly hot with December recording an average maximum of 28.9C which is about average.

The models look like they're in agreement that a tropical cyclone will develop off the northwest coast of Australia in the next few days, this often leads to a synoptic setup where hot offshore winds lead to heatwave conditions over Perth. BOM is currently only forecasting one very hot day of 39C next Monday but I wouldn't be surprised to see this change.

Sunshine recording has hit a new low in New Zealand., with the release of annual sunshine ranking/hours.

The true leaders are Blenheim at 2528 hrs (41.30"S) Tekapo at 2499 hrs (44.01"S) and Nelson at 2486 hours (41.16" S)

The "official" leaders, but using Mickey Mouse recording systems are Whakatane at 2706hrs (37.58"S) and New Plymouth at 2638 hrs (39.00"S) -these two both have values 300-350 hours Higher than the long term average established using a standardized recording system, and undertaken by a single government agency.

I found the article in the Marlborough express, which is presumably similar to the one you saw. New Plymouth (actually over 400 hours above its old means for 2013 and 2014) is under investigation, but NIWA don't currently have an answer. It's obvious that these instruments over-record direct solar radiation and also can drift in calibration - Queenstown Aero has twice in a short lifetime of readings had sudden reversions to impossibly low values (ironically). Meanwhile among the various M Mouse entries down the list, we have Franz Josef having completely bonkers values since April 2013 (11 months of data for 2014 with a partial total of 2507 (!!!!!! ) - its average for the "sane" periods of EWS recording is about 1700 (older manual site closer to the glacier only 1200).

Observer Agnew quoted in the Blenheim paper clearly doesn't know about the New Plymouth issue.

Looks like a cool change will sweep over and bring some much-needed rain and relief to the southern coast by Thurs/Fri.

Hopefully bloody yes! Need some relief from these constant 35+ temps. Here it's forecast to drop down to 22. Honestly I wouldn't even mind the hot days if the nights weren't so anomalous, but they've been straying far too much from the usual 16C or so.

Measly two hot days? There have only been like five days in total this month...

That does look like a particularly cool December but I'm fairly sure this past year was one of the warmest in Australian history (and that included Melbourne), and it's only going to get warmer so I'm not too sure there's a great deal of complaint to be had...
