Shitney getting thunderstorms yet again 3rd day in a row, while we have cold overcast stratojunk. Forecast for Sydney is 20-21C at night to 26-29C during the day with thunderstorms every bloody day, while we have low 20's maritime trip. GFS has also removed instability and sent it north FFS
Thunderstorms to our north, east, west, out in Bass Strait, even over Tasmania and FLinders Island over the last week. The forecast storms for us never eventuated. Sweet **** all here naturally. One of the worst Failbourne fizzers I've seen in my life. I feel like puking. : mad:
Meanwhile in NZ, virtually the entire country is averaging more than 2 C lower than the MTD temp norm:
We've had clients from Aus over this week. They remarked that Sydney winters are warmer than ChCh summers. All but one day this week has seen noon temps struggling to break 10 C.
You'll just have to settle for the sunny dry spring you had. Locally we were about 100 hours in surplus for spring. In Oceanic-land, you can't expect the presents to keep coming ...

I hate thunder and torrential rain. I'd happily give our thunderstorms to Melbourne. 20C nights are uncomfortable since they're very humid thus giving us a 'real feel' of 25C - yuck (glad I have an aircon). Though our days haven't been noticeably humid thankfully, at least not until the thunder comes.
Today we got hail. Now that was exciting. I was getting extremely sick of boring thunder and rain (I don't know why you're so into those?). Glad we had hail for a change. Seriously, I haven't seen hail here since like the mid 2000s. It has always hailed in other Sydney suburbs though. Hail is probably unevenly scattered and it was mere chance that it came down in our locality.
Marble Bar, Western Australia, is forecast to reach 49C on Saturday.
Not convinced though, as GFS has 850 temps at only 31C over the region, but you never know. 50C won't be reached, but I will expect Marble Bar to hit 47-48C. 49C will be a stretch IMO.
Lots of 46-48C temps in many centers in NW WA forecast. Even coastal stations will feel the heat, Port Hedland has 46C forecast.
The 50C watch is officially on! But as you say, don't hold your breath.
Highest temps I could find in Australia Friday were 46.0C in each of Marble Bar and Telfer.

Broome is also expecting sultry nights, lows of 28-29C forecast all week, but highs of only 35-36C.... these highs will be accompanied by very high dewpoints though. Broome is one of the most notoriously humid places in the country.
Speaking of dewpoints, no where in Aus has Troughton Island beat... dewpoints have been averaging around 28-30C the last few days ... and nights! Last 3 nights had a low of 29.5C with 29C dewpoints. Highs have been around 33-34C with 27-28C dewpoints.
As the heat builds over Australia it will draw the monsoon trough (ICTZ) south as evidenced by gradient level wind analysis. High dew points come with it; eventually all hell will break loose when The Wet finally begins.
This time yesterday Marble Bar was 43.5C and finished at 46.0C so they might make it to 49C but 50C seems unreachable. Still 49C is more than 120F so still very impressive.
The recent run of pesky cold nights, means avocados are off the menu next season. I just checked my tree, and there is almost no fruit set, despite the heavy flowering. Large diurnal ranges are a real problem here for avocados.
Calm humid conditions today, although the lower North Island got 185 km/h wind gusts on the east coast.
Well as expected no 50C anywhere. In fact, no 120F either. The highest over the weekend seems to have been 47.7C=118F at Port Hedland which is really impressive since it's on the coast.
Monday looks to be the last realistic shot at 120F for a while. No hope for 50C though.
Storms came here rather violently this afternoon. I haven't seen a rain so heavy since I don't know. The roads flooded and our grass looked like swamp. There was a mild hail. Temperatures plummeted from 28C to 18C. This was at 1pm-ish.
Interestingly, just an hour later, the sky cleared, sun came out and the roads became very dry (like there was no sign of an early rain). The temp went back up to 27C and RH went down to 50%. Sydney CBD didn't even get rain - lucky for them, the storms are coming from inland and not the coast.
You could say we had two seasons today.
Synoptic chart right now (poor subarctic Melbourne - did that green arrow really have to touch it? ):
