For those of you who live in the very cold climates (places where temps drop below -20F / -30C), have you heard trees popping yet this season? When I visited upstate NY, the temp dropped to -31C and trees were exploding like crazy. One every minute or so. Sounded like gunshots.

Yes! My deck, house, and the other day hiking I stopped in my tracks a couple times. Lmao. Trees were popping! Water content in them must of been freezing and expanding I guess. Pretty sick. Not used to that here.

Yeah. Water in the tree sap freezes and expands outward. Pretty awesome. Exploding tree - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

KY and WV might see some of that this week. It might scare the crap out of someone who doesn't know about it

The efforts there are massive with help from out of state and amount of machinery we can't imagine. Bulldozers are going down the street. Dumpsters back and forth. Must be surreal. Huge ongoing effort to get rid or clear the snows from the streets.

Click on the Mayors tweets for more pics. I'm wondering who has the best collection of pics from there.

nice wind up there.

Despite the extremely strong winds all day, there is still snow blowing around above tree line in the Presidential Range! We've been watching snow ripping over the edge of the lip of the Great Gulf at (quite literally) race car speeds all day.
