Interesting. Seattle is in the lower range when it comes to 30°C+ warmth, but has more 35°C+ heat. Makes sense, the source of hot air is closer.

Including two more southern cities with rather similar highs to Portland in summer: Lyon and Bordeaux (though Lyon is significantly warmer in July due to less lag).

Avg lowest high (1981-2010):

PDX 65.9°F /18.8°C
BDX 68.4°F /20.2°C
LYO 67.6°F /19.8°C

# of days below 18°C (since 2000)

PDX 3
BDX 2
LYO 4

And for heat:

# of days above 30°C (July since 2000)

PDX 118
BDX 111
LYO 147

# of days above 32°C (July since 2000)

PDX 62
BDX 59
LYO 89

# of days above 35°C (July since 2000)

PDX 22
BDX 14
LYO 22

# of days above 30°C (July since 2000)
YWG 73

# of days above 30°C (August since 2000)
YWG 66

When I was going through the numbers I saw quite a few 29.9C highs though, and lots of 29C highs.

How about Paris?

17 over 30C in July here since 2000. But that can hardly come as a surprise for anyone, considering that we don't even break 30C here every year, and when we do, you can't expect more than 2 or 3 days doing so. I'm quite confident that no summer ever has managed to break 30C in June, July AND August. It would be a rarity for the whole country to do so. This year were still in the game.

For the whole year:

Average highest (last 30 years)

And for Seattle and Portland again. They will probably do better vs Europe as they have more lag, so less hot days in July.

SEA 18
PDX 104

Triple digits

SEA 2
PDX 29

Portland is more prone to very hot temperatures than Massachusetts, though Portland heat is almost always accompanied by moderate dew points (50s) so very high heat indices might be less likely. Even Seattle is more likely to get triple digits than Amherst. Portland isn't bad for warmth for a non-continetal climate, its main issue is horrific amounts of time when it's raining the rest of the year. I'm imagining deep blue dome skies. Some sunshine near Portland, day was in the mid 80s:

a hops farm for beer. A local bicyclist told me I was in "beervana":

We had another wicked storm last night. I was outside walking a few blocks to my car when a strong wind storm moved in. I could barely walk. It was pretty intense. Not as long as last week's storm, but comparable to it.

Lame day. Below average yet again. High was 81F at MDW and 80F at ORD (27C). At least it was sunny. Very cool night ahead for this time of the year. More of the same the next few days (at least)

And this is how bad it's going to get next week

Tomorrow is only supposed to be 31ºC.
I never thought I'd think of that as relief.

Some highs from today across southern BC:

Southern Interior:
Osoyoos: 37ºC
Oliver: 36ºC
Keremeos: 34ºC
Penticton: 34ºC
Kelowna: 32ºC
Vernon: 32ºC
Kamloops: 33ºC
Cache Creek: 33ºC
Lillooet: 35ºC
Lytton: 32ºC
Castlegar: 35ºC
Nelson: 33ºC
Cranbrook: 34ºC
Merritt: 31ºC

Lower Mainland/Vancouver Island:
Nanaimo: 28ºC
Victoria: 23ºC
Vancouver: 22ºC
Abbotsford: 24ºC
Chilliwack: 26ºC
Hope: 26ºC

Obviously a lot hotter in the interior than on the coast.
