Temperature
Over the forecast period temperatures are expected to be close to average.
Precipitation
Above average but with the heaviest rainfall expected early in the month.
1/1 to 7/1 A very unsettled week is expected. There will be drier interludes but the emphasis is on spells of very wet and windy weather crossing all regions at times. Generally quite mild in southern regions, but in the north temperatures should be closer to the seasonal average. Over high ground in the north sleet or snow is likely at times. Generally a below average frost risk through the week.
8/1 to 14/1
The first half of the week is expected to bring further unsettled weather with outbreaks of rain again affecting all regions at times. Early in the period it is still likely to be quite mild in the south. During the second half of the week a transition to drier conditions is expected and temperatures are likely to fall with an increasing risk of overnight frost.
15/1 to 31/1
Forecast confidence for the second half of the month is low. Early in the period a gradual change back to more unsettled weather is expected to take place with rain returning from the west, but in the east drier and chillier weather could hold on for a while. Towards the end of the period unsettled weather is likely in all regions. Colder incursions are possible later in the period, especially in the north, and this could lead to some sleet or snow.
My friend is in Thunder Bay now to get the Canadian winter experience. Where she's from, the average Jan high is 7C. It's -36C in T-Bay now, the same as the current temperature of the North Pole...
Over here it's almost record breaking cold too, -16C. Today is supposed to have the coldest daily high in a decade and Friday and Tuesday are supposed to be similar.
High of 21 on Monday then 9 the next morning forecasted in my suburb. Coldest air since January 2010 it looks like and still a few out. I just wish it wasn't so in and out like the GFS says then we would be well into the single digits.
I can't believe the high on Monday here is 9F. And it is expected to go the negatives that night. I have never actually felt sub-zero temperatures, and I still won't because I'll be in Florida. But still, it's been quite some time since Kentucky was that cold...
For you guys not following.. Snow Ratios are through the roof in parts of MA. Areas getting 4-8 inches of fluff snow and just a tiny of that liquid. This is mountain type snow near the coast! Just fascinating!
"Beverly Airport has reported ~0.09" of liquid equivalent. If towns around there are reporting 6-8" of snow...off the charts ratios"
"The snow even in downtown #Boston is like Utah powder! Incredibly dry stuff. Ratios will be 20:1 for many towns. Easily blown around"
"Most towns north and west of Boston in the single digits already. This is about as cold as a snowstorm gets around here"
"With snow ratios this high and steady snow tonight...def would not be surprised by a 2' total in some towns"
