It's funny how up in arms everybody on various UK weather forums is getting about this cold snap. Looking in my records it's nothing unusual, won't be bringing snow to anywhere apart from Scotland most likely, and is only about 2 days. Similar happened on 19th-21st October 2010. This October's been more unusual in that it had no (really) mild spells at all, with a high temperature all month of a mere 13.8°C, when it would usually reach 17-18°C at least once.
Yes usually we would have had temperatures reach at least 20C or so down here & my maximum this month has been just 18.6C.

The thing about this cold spell is the temps, it will not be far off freezing in many places. That is rare in October.
Actually it isn't that unusual to see cold snaps like this in October (& it isn't going to be that cold in most places anyway) But it is unusual to see snow in October, as can be seen from the attached Met Office maps (Snow falling map only currently available for 1971-2000)...
When I say rare. I mean a once in a 10 year event.
People are going on like that over on netweather. As if they haven't seen snow before..
20c? I want proof of that
I'd still say something only happening once every 10 years was pretty rare! lol...
Most people wont be seeing snow from this very short lived cold snap anyway, so yeah even rarer
You want proof that it reaches 20C on the south coast in October?!? The average maximum temperature for October in Portsmouth is 15.8C! It usually does reach at least 20C, infact a few years ago I recorded 21C on Halloween...
No, I misread your post, I thought it said that you had seen 20c this october and I wanted proof.
It has reached 20c here in october too.
Well, it happened here last year and a few other years in this century so it isn't that rare to be honest. Saying that you live in Portsmouth i'd say getting snow in October is VERY hard to accomplish.
Air frosts are normal October in Buxton, it would be more unusual not to have one than to have one, so I think this cold spell is just nothing unusual.

Well I'm sure some places down south have reached at least 20C this October...
We normally would expect to see 20C/21C a couple of times in an average October & don't forget how hot it got at the start of last October! I also believe that the date record for the end of October is held by Southsea in Portsmouth, with 23.1C (but that's just from memory!).
I still say that snow ANYWHERE in the UK is rare in October, as the Met Office maps prove
