Chch's coastal suburbs still get frosts, which pohutukawas don't like.

I'm pretty sure I've seen some around. The data for the Mt. Pleasant site ('72 - '92) shows a July mean low of 5 C and it does not fall below freezing in an average year (average annual minimum is 0.4 C). And this is at 140 m ASL and a fair bit back from the coast. I'm sure Pohutakawas could stand an occasional light frost.

Some W'gton July average minima - Kelburn (126m ASL) 6.3C, Lower Hutt (Gracefield) 6.0C, Wellington Aero 6.7C. I'd like to see a picture of a pohutukawa in Ch'ch. I could imagine them perhaps being OK on Mt Pleasant with the persistent ENE keeping night temperatures up, but I've never heard of any being there.

There are Pohutakawa along the waterfront in Chch, not as prolific as in Wellington. Puka (Meryta sinclairii)is a tree I've only seen grown in Chch against buildings on under the protection of taller trees. In Wellington this tree can be seen in the open. Howea palms are something I havn't seen in Chch either, although there could be some somewhere. There are some nice micro climates in Chch.
