Sydney, Australia

Mean Minimum: 14.8C (58.4F)
Mean Maximum: 21.9C (71.4F)

Lowest Minimum: 9.7C (49.5F)
Highest Minimum: 19.5C (67.1F)

Lowest Maximum: 15.7C (60.3F)
Highest Maximum: 28.9C (84.0F)

Total Rainfall: 83.2mm (3.28 inches)
Total Days With > 0mm Rain: 14

Total Sunshine: 189.8 hours
Avg Sunshine / Day: 6.1 hours

La Nina has definitely arrived with cloudy conditions prevailing (October should be a much sunnier time of year). The first week was particularly cloudy although we had a sunny spell around the third week of the month.

BOM have not yet released their monthly climate review for Sydney, but last October also saw cloudy conditions with 6.8 sun hours/day (and that was the fourth cloudiest October on record so interesting to see where this one fits!)

Cannot remember the long term rainfall conditions for the month, but am sure it was rainier than the trend.

Looking at the long term forecast for November, expecting more of the same

La Nina is certainly making its presence felt with about half of the normal rainfall and raindays and sunnier than average conditions (a welcome change from last month). We also had a thunderstorm (followed by hail), which is a rarity around here.

Interesting that ChCh had about two more sunshine hours per day. You got an hour per day less than average whereas we had an additional hour.

Also interesting that the cloudiness in Sydney didn't equate to higher than average rainfall or raindays.

So you had about 245 hours' sun? If so it would be the 3rd highest on record there (just ahead of 3 readings of about 244), and about 62% of the recordable amount.

Nelson broke its local record with 296.7 hrs (provisional), just 2.9 short of the national record.

Not a month for sunlovers there. My daughter is visiting her new-mum cousin in Sydney - last Friday through Tuesday. I hope she gets a couple of decent days.

Yes, interesting that we go from possibly the cloudiest August ever last month to one of the sunniest Octobers this month.

Saturday was a beautiful day, the pick of the bunch. Definitely one to be outside enjoying the sun.

Sunday was a mixed bag, but generally a good day to be outside as a warm minimum (19.3C). A bit of rain in the afternoon and 5.5 hours of sun. Plus a thunderstorm thrown in later in the day. One of those days that would very nearly suit all climate preferences .

Last Friday, today and tomorrow are best suited for those that love the colour grey .

From my point of view, am grateful the weekend weather was the pick of the bunch!

Ironical really as Sydney had one of its sunniest Augusts ever and possibly one of its cloudiest Octobers ever!

Not too bad of a month but the rainfall would have to be the highest I have seen for a long time for 1 month which included 54.6mm/2.15inches yesterday.

So Sydney officially had its cloudiest October:

Sydney in October 2010

(almnost 2 hours/day under the long term average)

Not sure how far back the records go but not a month to work on the tan.....

I always assumed La Nina meant cloudy weather also for NZ, but must have been mistaken . Or is it more complex than that?
