Not too bad of a month but the rainfall would have to be the highest I have seen for a long time for 1 month which included 54.6mm/2.15inches yesterday.
Excellent total there and well deserved too . The monthly total of 135mm/5.3in. makes it the highest Oct. total of any since 1975 (150mm/5.9in.) Dams have now risen to 50% and the YTD rain (ending October) now stands at 566mm/22in. making it, so far, the highest annual total in 4 years!
October has certainly been an interesting and variable month here in Australia.
Sydney had just 189 hours of sun - cloudiest ever at the current site (operating since December 1976) - but not quite the cloudiest October ever when data from the old city site is factored in. In fact the lowest amount of Oct. sun goes to that of 1969 with just 139 hours. Nevertheless a good total and nice to see a cloudy record being broken for once! 6 days recorded NIL sunshine.
Rose Bay recorded 101mm of rain, above average for the first time since July. YTD rainfall now stands at 1103mm/43.4in. with rain falling on 137 days. Last year saw just 1011mm/39.80in during the whole year!.
Brisbane measured, in the city 306mm/12.04in and Aero 350mm/37.77in, of rain - highest October totals since 1972. Sunshine was also very low with just 211 hours being measured - the lowest since 1975 (198).

Yes - I worked out the average (from years of data) for Buxton to be 68 hours of sunshine for October, so we had 30 "extra" hours. Last October was 69 hours. I think October 2005 had about 35 hours to pick an extremely dull example. Horrific!
Last November had 27 hours of sunshine, I wonder if this year will beat that! It should!

Yes, it's about 1,150 hours per year. Others on here have tried to argue that with me, claiming it's about the same as Manchester (where I am now) but I have observed, travelling here from Buxton everyday, that Manchester often has breaks in cloud or clearer skies when Buxton is stuck in cloud due to the orographic enhancement of clouds over the hills it is on. I can find this out by looking on the Buxton weather webcam and seeing overcast there when it is fair in Manchester, on occasion.
It isn't surprising that Buxton is much clouider than most towns in England (apart from others on the western edge of the hills), the prevailing westerly/south westerly winds with Atlantic Moisture hitting the windward slopes of the hills where Buxton is, are conducive to extensive overcast conditions. Buxton also gets over 50% more rain than Manchester at 52 inches, compared with 31 inches.

As expected, La Nina has made things very dry save for the 25th-27th (it's been this way since late August, actually). Highs well above average and lows below average and an average diurnal temp range of 30F have made for very pleasant conditions, much more bearable than the neverending humidity usually present here.
Random trivia: The highest range was on the 7th, with a high of 87F/31C and a low of 42F/6C. Wearing jackets under long sleeves in the morning and T-shirts/shorts in the evening was a very interesting experience.

Overall an average October, though somewhat wetter October, bringing much needed rain. Until now, we had a series of 8 months (Feb-Sept) with above average temperatures, some well above average (March, April, May and July). This is also the first month with above average precipitation since March (all months from April to September had less than 3 inches of rain, most around 2 inches). Average is about 3.8 inches. By the end of the summer, some plants were turning brown-ish, but most had just enough rain to survive but not much more that.

I think of all the posters on this forum, you have the most right to complain about your weather. You got cold and extremely cloudy. At least your cold isn't very cold compared to continental climates but your cold lasts a much longer time.
I was in England one winter and it seemed like Liverpool was noticeably colder and cloudier than London. Do you think that's true, or do you think it was just luck on what days I was there? London didn't actually seem that bad at all.
