WA state may not be the worst, apparently Vermont and our nation's capitol are even worse for drug abuse, but WA is still pretty high up there.

Any explanations for as to why?

Weather and it's almost encouraged in WA? I'm not sure, but Seattle worries about the health consequences of soda and plastic bags, yet wants to provide shoot up sites in the city.

I think those people move to this part of the country and have been doing so for decades. The weather is just an excuse - this is deeply, genetically ingrained behavior. It's traditionally been a remote, lenient, and laid-back place that attracts addicts and slackers. Growing up, I saw drugs everywhere. I knew high school kids who did meth and had terrible acne from it. Everyone smoked cigarettes and pot and drank from a very early age. Parents smoking weed with their kids. House parties with lots of drugs. It's become part of the culture here. People are desperate to come off as tough badasses for some reason, and smoking, drinking, drugs and gambling are ways of projecting that image. I dunno why they do it. Maybe they are compensating.
