Hey everyone! I'll be visiting your area in two weeks to find a job. I'll be there for a week and I'm staying between the Adams Morgan and Dupont Circle area, whats around there? I did a walk score and its says its a walkers paradise but I'd like some locals opinion please. Good bars, restaurants, etc?? What would you recommend doing in my spare time while I'm there?
Everything's there - bars, restaurants, dance clubs, art galleries, local bookstores, music venues, stage theatres, farmers markets, organic food, memorials, etc... Some suggestions for a first-timer:
Madam's Organ bar for good live music and funky vibe
U Street near 14th for some nice jazz venues (Bohemian Caverns is a great place to see a show with top talent)
18th Street Lounge for a no-sign hip kind of place
One of the Ethiopian restaurants in Adams Morgan
Kramer Books in Dupont at 2 in the morning on the weekend (open 24 hours)
Also, though not in that area, I think the FDR Memorial is well worth the time, if you've never been.
I'd caution you that you might be a little optimistic that you'll find a job in a week. Usually takes several months. Competition's pretty fierce with a lot of highly educated, highly qualified people - unless you're looking to be a waiter or bartender or something.
I don't really expect to hear "you're hired" when I'm there. I'm hoping to get some leads in a certain direction. Going to temp agencies to get my foot in the door somewhere, calling companies for informal interviews to get my name out, etc...can't hurt right? I have an education and plenty of skills so we will see.
I'm definitely not being overly optimistic. I want to get my feel for the areas and hopefully move there in Jan-Feb. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm really excited to come up there
Temp agencies are in an abundance. It also gives an out of towner a feel for the way things work in Washington. I haven't done it since the early 90's, but when I did, I really found it to be helpful. Being optimistic and having faith is the only way to be in big bad Washington, DC. Bring a great personality with you and you'll be fine. GL
Thanks for the optimism BWALDON. I believe I have a great personality that would fit well in the DC area. Keeping my fingers crossed. I have a lot of phone calls to make this week 12 more days!

So, were you ever able to make the move and break into the workforce?
