Back in Mid March the idiots at the National Park Service looked at the winters weather to date and the computer models predicting the weather for the rest of the month and came up with the expected dates of the Cherry Blossoms to peak on the Tidal Basin. They said the peak dates would be March 25th to March 29th.
With this in mind hundreds of thousands of people made their travel plans to come to Washington DC to see the Cherry Blossoms over the Easter Weekend. They rushed to the Tidal Basin and ...... (Drum Roll Please!) THERE WERE NO CHERRY BLOSSOMS! In fact the whole area looked like winter during the predicted peak bloom period with brown grass and grey grey grey!
As March that felt like January dragged on and on why didn't they say that they blew it and update the information and apologize to everyone. They didn't up date the information until late March.
There's other stuff to do besides the Cherry Blossoms though, so that while it may have been one of the things said tourists wanted to go to, there's still the museums and other stuff.

But the tourists came to DC that weekend to see the Cherry Blossoms! They can see the other stuff you mention any time.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but they base their prediction on peak bloom off past events. The weather has been a little colder than usual this time of year. It's just like predicting weather, you can predict what may happen but mother nature may have other plans. We saw that when we were suppose to get hit by that storm a month ago. It happens, and it's a mistake by said tourists to hold the NPS word as gospel anyway.

What a sad state of affairs!
It's nature. Humans (even those at the NPS) don't control it. We can only guess as to when the blossoms would peak. Would you rather they don't guess, and just announce "PEAK BLOOMS!" one morning? Do you think all of those tourists would drop everything to fly into DC on a day's notice?

To me the statement from the National Park Service saying the Cherry Blossoms would peak on March 25th, is about as silly as the 10 day forecast put out by Bob Ryan and the other TV Weather fools. They are promising people greater prediction powers than they really have. The problem is many people believed them and made trip plans and were forced to shiver in 40 degree temps looking at brown grass and bare trees.

Where did they say this? Not on their website, they are listing April 3-6 as peak blooming.
" It is nearly impossible to give an accurate forecast much more than 10 days before the Peak Bloom and each year National Park Service Horticulturists monitor 5 stages of bud development and provide a forecast and updates as needed. The following is a comparative record of past bud development in which 70% of the buds reached each stage:
"
They updated the information after the original prediction did not come true. Now the April3-6th prediction looks like it will be false due to the cold weather we are having the rest of this week. Bunch of fools!
