It can be hard to time the peak bloom b/c the weather is a major variable and the peak bloom only lasts for about a week or two. One thing to be aware of...the peak bloom does not always conincide with the official Cherry Blossom Festival that occurs in DC every year.

THe other thing is, that peak bloom may have really cruddy weather. You don't always get the best weather when peak bloom comes, so sometimes pre bloom can be even nicer to see. You just have to come and take your chances.

Bloom Watch

What ever you do. Take the Metro. There are so many people and so little parking. Your objective is to enjoy the beauty and make it as painless as possible.

Last year the "peak bloom" weather was crazy (April) the day we went it was sunny and beautiful....then the next day the weather changed and DC got snow! The pictures were beautiful though...snow with the blossoms!

Yes...take the metro.

It's beautiful, if the weather and trees cooperate! (I'll try and load some photos from last year)
There is activites and preformaces etc... And you have all the smithsonians to visit.
We spent the day, it's alot of walking all around the mall and the tidal basin etc...

If you are comming down just for it and you are close (driving dist) then I'd wait and watch the weather and see if it's nice and the trees are bloomiong. Then come in, and plan 1 day for walking around (the nice sunny day!) and then the other day for exploring the DC area. Potomac falls park is really nice to hike in and the C&O canal is great for biking etc...

There are food festivals and outdoor concerts. I think it was worth attending, personally. If you don't like large crowds of people, it can be intimidating.

I highly recommend taking the Metro.
