Where to live between Pentagon & Rockville? (schools, restaurants)

It looks like the husband and I will be headed to DC this summer - he'll be working at the Pentagon & I'll likely be working in Rockville (near White Flint). I'm not at all familiar with the DC area, but have heard horror stories about traffic and commuting. Any thoughts about where to live that would make a reasonable commute for each of us? We'd need to be near the metro as he'd be taking it to work. We don't have kids, so schools aren't an issue but we'd like to be in walking distance to shops/restaurants. Max budget is $3500 and we'd ideally like 1000sf+. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
